Wolverine Co-op Air Permit Denied by State of Michigan, Skyrocketing Rate Increases Idenitifed as Major Reason Cherryland Board Election Seen as Pivotal Event
From the official State of Michigan announcement:
The state's decision is based on findings of the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), which said the company failed to demonstrate the plant was needed to meet future supply needs.
The MPSC staff also determined that building the proposed plant would increase electricity rates paid by average residential customers to 20.7 cents per kilowatt-hour. The 59.2 percent rate increase would cost the average residential customer $76.95 more each month. Only Hawaii has a higher average kilowatt-hour rate.CLICK HERE TO READ FULL STATEMENT
Cherryland Board Member Elections - June 16, 3:00PM at Wuerfel Park
All Cherryland Electric Cooperative members are urged to come to their annual meeting to participate in the co-op's annual meeting. Voting for board of directors will take place at the meeting, or by mail using the ballot in the May issue of Country Lines Magazine.
Co-opConversations strongly supports Maureen Charbonneau to bring new leadership to the board. Dan Paulson is another candidate we urge members to consider.
Cherryland members have unknowningly contributed over $11 million dollars to the promotion of the Wolverine coal plant proposal, but the current Cherryland board gave their approval. Why did the board go along with Wolverine to waste member money on a proposal that has been shown to be too expensive for the last two years? What did Wolverine promise the board so they would not ask serious questions about what the cost of power would be? Why has the current leadership not asked Wolverine to explain to the members what the cost of the plant would be and the cost of power?
Cherryland Cooperative members are member-owners. They own the co-op and the board is supposed to work for them and represent their best interest. This is clearly not being done.
Financial information about this proposal has been hidden form the general membership for the past three years, now we know the reason, the costs were just sky high!
But Wolverine and Cherryland are considering an appeal to the permit denial! They want to spend more of our money on this bad idea. Someone has to say NO. You can send that message by voting for new leaaders at the annual meeting on June 16. Voting is between 3:00 and 4:00PM at Wuerful Park. Click on the map for directions.
Co-op Conversations is not financed by or affiliated with any rural electric cooperative.
