Arkansas Members File Lawsuit Against Energy Cooperative
A Siloam Springs man has filed a lawsuit against his Electric Cooperative claiming that the corporation has failed to refund more than $170 million in capital credits to past and present members. The lawsuit also claims violations of fiduciary duty, shareholder oppression and breach of contract arguing that "Carroll Electric is hoarding money or wasting member assets." Coal Power Plant Rejected!
The Court of Appeals stopped an incredibly dirty coal-burning power plant proposed for the Natural State. By doing so, the Court protected our environmental, public, and economic health. Coal is a risky investment in 2009--Arkansas shouldn't gamble her future on it. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL STORY

Carroll Electric Coop not operating in a democratic manner
Friday, July 3, 2009—Those who attended the Carroll Electric annual Members Meeting on May 28 witnessed an amazing event. Never had a group of this size come to a CECC board meeting to stand up for our rights as members and owners. ...people were stunned as CECC leaders adjourned the meeting and exited the room without even acknowledging their presence. CECC managements' attempt to deny members the right to speak at the annual membership meeting is unacceptable. CECC's efforts to block members from fully participating at the annual meeting by refusing to allow use of the meeting room cannot stand. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL STORY

How cooperative is Carroll Electric Cooperative?
Friday, July 3, 2009—Holiday Island resident Buzz Peine is shown on his property near Butler Creek. Peine was disappointed that contractors for Carroll Electric sprayed herbicide down to the water's edge on his right-of-way. The area sprayed was underwater last summer. Peine feels like the spraying broke the law. Photo by Chip Ford [Order this photo] CARROLL COUNTY -- In late May, about 150 people attending the annual meeting of the Carroll Electric Cooperative Corp. (CECC) in Berryville to voice concerns about herbicide spraying on right of ways had reason to question how cooperative their cooperative is. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL STORY

Arkansas Clean Coal Plant a Joke With a Nasty Punchline
Opponents of a coal-fired power plant in southwest Arkansas have multiple fronts on which they're battling the facility. The joke is that the supporters of the $1.6 billion coal-fired power plant are pointing to "emerging technology that could capture and store carbon..." The nasty punchline (and the reason for the use of "could" instead of "will" in the above quote) is that the likely timeline for the deployment of commercial-scale carbon capture and storage is around 30 years ... if ever. Co-opConversations.org exists as a tool to educate cooperative members in Arkansas, and beyond, about potential problems that exist today in some co-ops right here in America. The question every co-op member needs to ask is “If I am a member-owner, would I risk my hard earned money this way?”

We are looking for volunteers to help us manage co-op news for this page, if you are interested, please send us a note and we can talk about how you can contribute to your state effort CLICK HERE.
